Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any major awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a demand for the addition fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
