Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the censorship procedure.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and image appear in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt serious questions about the information may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, some conservative commentators and former President allies came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet some are not, including prominent figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed certain rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“It’s quite ironic how the political left falsely accused President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the legislative approval to pass a bill requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy binders of materials that included no new data.
